Seasonality of reproduction in Bathyergidae is a function of group size: A novel hypothesis (Rodentia)

In the African mole-rat family (Bathyergidae), species show both year-round and seasonal breeding patterns even though all inhabit regions with varying rainfall (a well-known selection driver of breeding). This short review suggests a novel hypothesis explaining why some breed seasonally others year-round. Namely, group-living (with mean colony size greater than five) exhibit an aseasonal reproduction pattern, as breeders, particularly females, possess high body conditions. is likely due to access abundant high-quality resources (food water) throughout year reduced frequency engaging in strenuous activities, such digging, increased efficiency locating retrieval resource function group size.
